Importing From India to Myanmar

Updated

India and Myanmar share a long land border, and in January 2026 India had to ask for it to be reopened for trade. At the Joint Trade Committee that month, India "reiterated its request for the early reopening" of the Tamu-Moreh and Rhi-Zokhawthar border trade posts, while both sides set a target of USD 5 billion in trade by 2030, up from USD 2.15 billion in 2024-25 (India Tribune, 21 January 2026 (opens in a new tab), Reported).

That gap between the target and the closed gates is the whole story for a Myanmar buyer. The agreement exists, and the practical route is narrow. This is a short status page, not a guide, because we haven't researched sanctions exposure, banking channels or how preference claims are handled at Myanmar's border today.

The decision in brief is in the playbook: Exporting and trade → /india/#trade. The shared agreement rules are on the ASEAN bloc page.

1. The Agreement on Paper

Myanmar is an ASEAN member, so AITIGA covers it, and its schedule is on India's Commerce Ministry page (commerce.gov.in, India-ASEAN agreements (opens in a new tab)). Like Cambodia, Laos and Viet Nam, it cut tariffs on a later schedule than the rest of ASEAN, so rates quoted for other members don't carry over.

2. The Licence Is the Bottleneck

Since 1 January 2026, every import licence application goes through Myanmar's TradeNet 2.0 system, an importer may file only one application per calendar month for goods under the same HS code, and an application not approved within 180 days is cancelled automatically (Department of Trade Announcement No. 4/2025, as summarised by Tilleke & Gibbins (opens in a new tab), Reported). All imports also pay licence fees, customs duty and commercial tax (Myanmar National Trade Portal (opens in a new tab)).

For an Indian order that means the licence, not the supplier, sets your timing. Don't let a supplier start production on your order until the licence is approved, and don't split one product across several small orders expecting several licences in a month.

3. Payment

Both governments talk about the rupee-kyat settlement mechanism, and it was on the January 2026 agenda (same India Tribune report). We haven't checked which banks offer it or how reliably it works, so treat it as unconfirmed and ask your bank before you agree payment terms.

Next Step

Every Indian agreement is on India's trade agreements.
