Trade fair

World Spice Congress

The World Spice Congress is the Spices Board of India's meeting for the global spice trade. It's a congress with an exhibition on the side, not a sourcing fair with a thousand stands. The board, the big exporters and the regulators all sit in one place, which makes it the best room we know for learning how Indian spice actually gets tested.

The board, the big exporters and the regulators all sit in one place, which makes it the best room we know for learning how Indian spice actually gets tested.

The catch is timing. It doesn't run every year, the last one was in 2023, and the 15th edition has no dates yet.

Who exhibits

The Spices Board, a government body under the commerce ministry, runs it. At the 2023 edition there were about 130 exhibitors on 156 stalls and over 1,300 participants, 132 of them international delegates from 33 countries (organiser's site).

Exhibitors are spice exporters registered with the board, plus processors and state and commodity pavilions. Board registration tells you the firm is a registered exporter. It doesn't tell you whether it grows, processes or trades, and each of those is a normal part of the spice chain. Ask where the lot is grown, who cleans and grinds it, and what testing happens before it ships.

Hosted-buyer terms

Not published for the next edition, as at September 2026. In 2023 the programme included reverse buyer-seller meetings and visits to processing facilities for overseas delegates (organiser's site).

Visa

The e-Business Visa is the usual route. Apply at least two weeks ahead and ask the organiser for an invitation letter.

Getting there

The venue hasn't been announced, so there's no travel note yet. The 2023 edition was at CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre, Navi Mumbai.

What to expect

Sessions on food safety, residue limits and market access, with the stands as a side. Why does that matter to you? Because Indian spice fails different borders for different reasons, and the congress is where those reasons get argued out loud.

So it's the right room if you want to understand testing and traceability before you order, and the wrong one if you hoped to walk stands and fill a bag with samples. The full testing picture is in quality control in India.

Past editions

  • 14th edition: 15 to 17 September 2023, CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre, Navi Mumbai, with about 130 exhibitors and 132 international delegates from 33 countries (organiser's site).
