Importing From India to Belgium
- Updated
In 2025 Belgium's product safety inspectors reported an Indian-made children's dress to the EU's Safety Gate. The fault wasn't the fabric or the stitching. It had a functional cord at the neck, a strangulation risk under EN 14682 (Safety Gate alert, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Every one of Belgium's six product safety alerts on Indian goods since 2021 is that same fault, and each one was a design choice nobody caught before the order was placed.
That's the Belgian lesson in one line - the checks that bite are the ones you could have written into the spec. The duty, GSP and the product rules are the same everywhere in the EU and they're on the EU bloc page. What's Belgian is what Belgium's own inspectors keep finding, Antwerp, and the three languages. Where we couldn't read a Belgian rule we say so.

1. What Belgian Inspectors Find
Back to that dress. The six alerts cover children's clothing with functional cords or drawstrings at the neck or waist - skirts, shorts, dresses and a T-shirt, 2021 to 2025. It's a design fault, not a factory fault, and it's caught at the tech-pack stage by writing "no functional cords in the hood, neck or waist area for sizes under 14" into the spec.
On food, Belgium raised 86 alerts on Indian goods, and shrimp stands out, with 14 crustacean notifications including malachite green in black tiger shrimp in March 2026 (RASFF 2026.2472 (opens in a new tab)). Turmeric with chlorpyrifos appears twice in 2026 alone. Seafood buyers should ask for the exporter's residue monitoring results by lot, and the test plans are on Quality control.
2. Antwerp, CIF and the Charges Nobody Quoted
Under CIF your supplier pays the freight to Antwerp and chooses the carrier. The charges after the ship arrives - terminal handling, the agent's release fee, delivery order, often storage - are billed to you by an agent you never picked. Our CIF page follows one Belgian buyer through exactly this. Get that agent's tariff in writing before you accept CIF, or buy FOB or FCA with your own forwarder so the Antwerp end is quoted by someone who works for you.
Belgium also matters well beyond Belgium. It's India's twentieth-largest export market, at US$6.60 billion in FY2025-26 (PIB, 15 April 2026 (opens in a new tab), our computation), and a good part of that moves on through Belgian distributors. In UK import statistics Belgium is the third-largest source of carpets at 13.5%, and Belgium doesn't weave that many rugs (our analysis of UN Comtrade, 2025). So if you're a UK or Swiss buyer paying a Belgian wholesaler for Indian rugs, you're paying a margin you could go direct around.
3. VAT, Labels and Customs
Import VAT is charged at the Belgian standard rate of 21% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), last checked by the Commission 13 July 2026, read 25 September 2026). Belgium also runs an import VAT deferral scheme for licensed importers. We couldn't read its conditions, because the Belgian finance site served a bot check to every read, so ask your broker before you plan cash flow around it.
Belgium has three official languages - Dutch, French and German. Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 (opens in a new tab) asks for the official language or languages of the member state unless the state says otherwise, and we couldn't read the Belgian rule for the same reason. The safe instruction on your purchase order is Dutch and French at least, and all three if you sell in the east.
Customs is the General Administration of Customs and Excise at FPS Finance (opens in a new tab). If you'd rather someone handled the Antwerp agent and the release, SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) does that.
