Importing From India to Bulgaria

Updated

On 21 August 2023 Bulgarian border inspectors stopped three Indian consignments on the same day. One was cumin seed, and two were Ayurvedic herbal supplements, one of which carried ethylene oxide at 72 mg/kg (RASFF 2023.5625 (opens in a new tab)). For scale, the EU limit on the cumin that day was 0.1. Bulgaria doesn't raise many alerts on Indian goods, but when it does, the goods almost never get past the border.

This page covers what is Bulgarian about buying from India - the border, the euro switch, the Cyrillic label and the two sea routes in. Duty and the EU-wide rules are on the EU bloc page. Bulgaria wasn't in our trade data study, so there are no India-Bulgaria volumes here, and we'd rather show that gap than guess.

1. Bulgaria Stops Goods at the Border

Bulgaria raised 11 EU food alerts on Indian goods from 2021 to September 2026, and 10 of them were border rejections (RASFF Window (opens in a new tab), our count to 22 September 2026). That's a different shape from Austria or Denmark, where most alerts come from goods already on shelves. In Bulgaria the problem shows up at entry, which means the container sits, and you pay for it to sit.

Every one of the 11 was a pesticide finding. Cumin shows up again in January 2024 with profenofos at 0.85 mg/kg against 0.05, black caraway with chlorpyrifos in April 2026, and a basmati lot "dispatched by Türkiye" in March 2026. So if you bring Indian spices or supplements into Bulgaria then send the lot's residue report to your broker before the ship lands, not after the inspector asks. The test lists by product are on Quality control.

2. Euro Invoices and Cyrillic Labels

Bulgaria adopted the euro on 1 January 2026 (European Commission, Bulgaria and the euro (opens in a new tab), read 25 September 2026). Invoices and customs values are now in euro. If an Indian supplier still quotes you in leva then their price template is old, and it's worth asking what else in it is old.

Import VAT (ДДС) is charged at the standard rate of 20% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), last checked by the Commission 13 July 2026, read 25 September 2026).

The label is in Bulgarian, which uses Cyrillic, under Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 (opens in a new tab). That's an artwork job, not a word swap. Send your supplier the final Bulgarian text as a file and approve a printed proof, because a Tiruppur label printer won't catch a wrong Cyrillic letter and neither will you from a photo on WhatsApp.

3. Two Ways In by Sea

One route runs through the Bosphorus to Varna or Burgas on the Black Sea. The other lands at Thessaloniki or Piraeus in Greece and finishes by truck. Both depend on the Suez Canal. On a Cape routing the Black Sea is the end of the line, and a Greek port plus a truck may well beat it. We have no transit times for any of these ports, because the Indian gateways we mapped all end in western Europe. Ask for both routes, with the port and the canal named on the quote.

Customs is the National Customs Agency (customs.bg, listed on the EU's page of national customs sites (opens in a new tab)). If you want the Greek-port option priced and run for you, SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) can book it.
