Importing From India to Czechia
- Updated
In September 2024 Czech inspectors found chlorpyrifos in a sambhar masala at 0.076 mg/kg, over seven times the EU limit. The route on the notification reads like a travel diary - "from India, via UK, via Germany" (RASFF 2024.6709 (opens in a new tab)). An Indian spice blend crossed two borders and two sets of hands before a Czech shopper could buy it, and nobody along the way tested for the one pesticide the EU bans outright.
That's the shape of Czechia's trade with India. It's landlocked, it buys a lot through neighbours, and the Czech importer ends up answering for goods it never saw leave India. Duty and the EU-wide rules are on the EU bloc page. This page covers what's Czech.

1. Bought Through Neighbours, Answered for at Home
Czechia raised 13 EU food alerts on Indian goods from 2021 to September 2026, and 6 of them name an indirect route - via the Netherlands, Austria, the UK, Poland, the UK and Germany, and Spain (RASFF Window (opens in a new tab), our count to 22 September 2026). Cumin that came via Poland in 2024 had pyrrolizidine alkaloids at 985 µg/kg against 400. Black pepper via Spain in August 2026 had chlorpyrifos.
So the Czech question isn't "which Indian supplier?" as often as "which wholesaler, and what did they test?" Ask for the lot's own report, and make sure chlorpyrifos and pyrrolizidine alkaloids are on it for spices. Buying direct from India shortens that chain, and the checks for an Indian exporter are on how to check an Indian supplier.
Czechia's product safety alerts point at fragrance. Both 2026 alerts on Indian goods were perfumes - one with BMHCA (lilial), which is banned in EU cosmetics, and one with allergens such as limonene and citral present but missing from the ingredient list (Safety Gate (opens in a new tab)). Hungary sees the same fault far more often, and the detail is on the Hungary page.
2. VAT, Labels and Customs
Import VAT (DPH) is charged at the Czech standard rate of 21% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), last checked by the Commission 13 July 2026, read 25 September 2026).
The label is in Czech under Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 (opens in a new tab). Czech and Slovak are close, but they aren't the same on a label, so a consignment split between Prague and Bratislava needs both. Customs is the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic (opens in a new tab).
3. The Sea Leg Is German, the Rail Leg Is Yours
Hamburg is the traditional gateway, with Bremerhaven, Rotterdam and, from the south, Koper as alternatives, all followed by rail or road under EU transit. Our only India transit to a North Sea port is Rotterdam at 33 days from Nhava Sheva (carrier schedules, September 2026, Indicative). Add the rail leg and the transit declaration, and decide with your broker whether to clear at the port or at an inland Czech customs office. If you're entering through Croatia, read the Croatia page first, because Czech-bound rice was turned back at Rijeka in 2026 for a missing document. SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) can run the transit and origin paperwork.
