Importing From India to Spain

India's exports to Spain jumped from US$4.76 billion in FY2024-25 to US$6.97 billion in FY2025-26, up 46.33%, the biggest rise among India's top twenty markets (PIB, 15 April 2026 (opens in a new tab), our computation). That's a headline worth a second look. We haven't broken the rise down by product, and a jump that size in one year is more often fuel or one large contract than a broad change in what Spanish shops buy.
So treat it as a flag, not a trend. This page covers what's Spanish about importing from India: the VAT and how to defer it, the Castilian label rule, what Spanish controls stop, and the ports. The duty and the EU rules are on the bloc page.

Duty is the same across the EU: see the EU bloc page.
1. Deferring Import VAT
Import VAT (IVA) is charged at the Spanish standard rate of 21% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), checked by the Commission 13 July 2026).
Here's the Spanish detail that saves cash. If you file monthly VAT returns, you can defer import VAT to the return instead of paying at the border. You opt in on the census declaration (modelo 036) during the November before the year concerned, and the option covers every import that year (Agencia Tributaria, deferring import VAT (opens in a new tab)). Miss November and you wait a year. If you plan to import regularly from India in 2027, that's a diary note for this November.
2. Castilian on Every Label
The textile label must be in Spanish. The national rule goes further, requiring every label inscription at least in Castilian (Real Decreto 928/1987, article 17 (opens in a new tab)). Some regions have co-official languages, and we haven't read a regional rule that requires them on consumer labels. Selling into Catalonia? Ask your customer before you print.
3. What Spanish Controls Stop
Spain raised 124 EU food alerts on Indian goods from 2021 to September 2026, fourth in Europe (our count of RASFF Window (opens in a new tab), to 23 September 2026). A third of them came in 2021, the year ethylene oxide was found across Indian sesame and spices, and it's still the single largest cause, named in 26. The 2026 cases are cumin, cardamom and organic ashwagandha root with pesticide residues. An "organic" certificate doesn't stop a residue test, so test the lot, not the paperwork. Test plans are on Quality control.
4. Ports, and Algeciras as a Relay
Customs is the Agencia Tributaria's customs department (opens in a new tab). Valencia, Algeciras and Barcelona are the container gateways. Algeciras is also a transshipment hub. On our Chennai schedules it appeared as a relay on routings to Australia, never as a destination from India. So ask whether your box is discharged in Spain or only relayed through it.
