Importing From India to Slovenia

In August 2026 Slovenia stopped a food supplement from India because it contained titanium dioxide (E171), an additive the EU banned in food in 2022 (RASFF 2026.7018 (opens in a new tab)). A month later it stopped an Indian ingredient that counts as an unauthorised novel food (RASFF 2026.8182 (opens in a new tab)). Neither was contamination. Both were formulas made for a market with different rules.
Slovenia's file on Indian food is bigger than its size suggests, 35 notifications since 2021, partly, we think, because Koper is a gateway for its neighbours too. This page covers the Slovene VAT, the label, what Slovenian controls stop, and what Koper means for you. The duty and EU-wide rules are on the bloc page.

1. Supplements Are the Pattern
Of Slovenia's 35 EU food alerts on Indian goods from 2021 to September 2026, 11 involve food supplements, alongside the usual cumin, sesame and rice (our count of RASFF Window (opens in a new tab), to 23 September 2026). The failures are about what's allowed in the formula, E171, unauthorised additives in syrups, novel-food ingredients, more than about dirt.
Indian supplement makers often produce the same formula for India, the Gulf and Europe. So send the supplier the EU's permitted list for your product type and ask them to confirm, ingredient by ingredient, that the EU batch matches it. Test plans are on Quality control.
2. VAT and the Label
Import VAT (DDV) is charged at the Slovene standard rate of 22% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), checked by the Commission 13 July 2026). The textile label must be in Slovene, which isn't Slovak and isn't Croatian. Three neighbouring markets means three labels.
3. Koper Is Everyone's Port
Customs is the Financial Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (FURS) (opens in a new tab). Koper is the container port, and it's the one Austrian, Hungarian, Slovak and southern German importers use for an Adriatic entry instead of Hamburg or Rotterdam. That gives a small country a well-served port, but you share the vessel space.
On a Suez routing Koper is among the first EU calls from India. On a Cape routing it's among the last. No Indian gateway we mapped listed Koper, so we have no transit to give. If you're in Slovenia, clear at Koper. If you're a neighbour, it's a choice between clearing there and moving under transit to clear at home.
