Importing From India to Sweden

Updated

Home › India › Trade › EU › Sweden

Since 2021 Sweden has raised ten EU safety alerts on Indian-made consumer products, more than France or Italy did. Four were skin-lightening creams with banned actives, two were rings leaching cadmium, and one was a candle holder with lead (Safety Gate alert 10096732 (opens in a new tab), cadmium ring set, 2026). Swedish inspectors clearly look hard at small consumer goods, and they test the metal, not the paperwork.

This page covers what's Swedish about buying from India: that testing habit, the VAT and who you pay it to, the label, and the route in. The duty and the EU-wide rules are on the bloc page.

Duty is the same across the EU: see the EU bloc page.

1. What Swedish Inspectors Catch

Cadmium and lead turn up in cheap alloy jewellery and decorative metalwork, and the EU limits are strict. If you buy fashion jewellery or brass and metal décor from Moradabad or Jaipur, ask for a heavy-metals test on the finished piece from an accredited lab. Skin-lightening creams are the other pattern. The alerts cite banned actives, steroids among them, so get the full ingredient list checked against the EU banned list before you buy any cream sold as "whitening".

Food follows the usual Indian pattern. Of Sweden's 47 EU food alerts on Indian goods since 2021, cumin is named in 10, including ground cumin carrying chlorpyrifos and 14 other pesticides in May 2026 (RASFF 2026.4322 (opens in a new tab)). Test plans are on Quality control.

2. VAT, the Label and One Swedish Rule

Import VAT (moms) is charged at the Swedish standard rate of 25% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), checked by the Commission 13 July 2026). A VAT-registered Swedish importer reports it in the VAT return to the Tax Agency. A business without Swedish VAT registration pays it to Swedish Customs instead (Skatteverket, purchasing goods from non-EU countries (opens in a new tab)). Registering first is the cash-flow win.

The textile label must be in Swedish. Sweden also keeps a few chemical rules of its own. The Chemicals Agency's list has none specific to textiles or leather, but one touches furniture - formaldehyde in wood-based boards (KEMI, certain Swedish restrictions and bans (opens in a new tab)). If you buy Indian furniture made with MDF or particleboard, ask for the board's emission class.

3. Gothenburg or a Hub

Customs is Swedish Customs (Tullverket) (opens in a new tab). Gothenburg is the container gateway, but much Swedish-bound Asian cargo lands at Rotterdam or Hamburg and carries on by feeder or rail. No schedule we read listed Gothenburg from an Indian port. For a smaller importer the answer sits in the carrier's schedule, not a rule, so get both options quoted.
