Importing From India to Denmark
- Updated
In July 2025 Danish inspectors flagged a pani puri masala from India for chlorpyrifos. It had come "via Sweden" (RASFF 2025.5504 (opens in a new tab)). Three months later an ajwain from India turned up with pyrrolizidine alkaloids far over the limit, this time "via France". Denmark keeps finding Indian food that entered the EU somewhere else.
This page covers what's Danish about buying from India - the inspectors' record, the VAT, the label and the feeder route in. Duty and the EU-wide rules, including GPSR and EUDR for wooden furniture, are on the EU bloc page. Denmark wasn't in our trade data study, so there are no India-Denmark volumes here.

1. Denmark Tests What's Already on the Shelf
Denmark raised 62 EU food alerts on Indian goods from 2021 to September 2026. Unlike Bulgaria or Cyprus, most were information and alert notifications, not border rejections (RASFF Window (opens in a new tab), our count to 22 September 2026). In plain words, Danish inspectors sample goods already on sale. And 10 of the 62 name an indirect route through Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, the UK or France.
What do they find? Pesticides, overwhelmingly, in rice, spices and seeds. Cereals, rice above all, account for 19 notifications. In 2025 and 2026 chlorpyrifos turned up in ginger powder, coriander seeds (twice), cumin via the Netherlands and chickpea flour. If you sell Indian groceries in Denmark then your supplier's test report has to cover the EU's banned list, not just the Indian export standard, and it has to be for your lot. The plans by product are on Quality control.
2. VAT, Labels and Customs
Import VAT (moms) is charged at the Danish standard rate of 25% (Your Europe, VAT rates (opens in a new tab), last checked by the Commission 13 July 2026, read 25 September 2026). Denmark has a single rate with few reductions, so there's little to get wrong.
The label is in Danish under Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 (opens in a new tab). Danish, Norwegian and Swedish fibre names look alike, but they aren't interchangeable on a label. Customs is the Danish Customs Agency (Toldstyrelsen) (opens in a new tab).
Denmark is also a design-led buyer of the furniture, lighting and home textiles that Jodhpur, Moradabad, Karur and Panipat make. Nothing Danish loosens the EU rules on those, and EUDR applies to wooden furniture from 30 December 2026 for large and medium firms.
3. The Feeder Leg
Aarhus is the main container port, with Copenhagen-Malmö the other. Much of Denmark's Asian cargo arrives on feeders from Hamburg, Bremerhaven or Rotterdam. Our India transit to Rotterdam is 33 days from Nhava Sheva and a 25-day median from Chennai (carrier schedules, September 2026, Indicative), and the feeder and hub time come on top. If you want the whole chain booked, SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) can do it.
Up: the EU bloc page and India's trade agreements.
