Karur Handloom Cluster: Table Linen, Kitchen Cloths and a Town That Ships Unseen

Updated

In January 2026 Karur's textile makers did something exporters hate to do in public. They cut the working week. Factories that ran six days began running four or five, because fresh US orders had dried up since September and some US buyers wanted steep discounts on orders already placed. The president of the Karur Textile Manufacturers Association used the moment to ask the government to finish a US trade deal (Apparel Resources, 7 Jan 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

The same report gave the cluster's size, and it's bigger than most foreign buyers expect. Here's a short page on what the town makes and why it's so hard to see from abroad.

What It Makes

The government lists Karur as a Town of Export Excellence for handlooms (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The trade describes it as a home-textile town, making bed linen, table covers, kitchen cloths, mats and sofa covers (Apparel Resources, 2026). The official word is handloom and the trade word is home textiles, and they aren't the same thing. If a handloom claim matters to your customer, ask which looms wove your cloth and go and see them.

Why You Can't See It From Abroad

More than half of all US bed-linen bills from India carry no shipper name at all, 51.8% in our count, and the named half is dominated by big mills. So a town of made-ups exporters can ship a great deal and still look empty in a database (US import bill-of-lading records, our analysis). That's useful in two ways. It means a Karur exporter without a long public shipping history isn't necessarily small or new. And it means you can't use US shipping data to check one, so the checks on how to verify Indian suppliers do the work instead.

How To Approach It

Karur makers don't answer cold email well, and the playbook's locations section tells that buyer's story. The part worth repeating here is the warning from a former Karur merchandiser in the same thread, who offered to name makers "who compromise the quality for better quotation" (r/Karur, 2026 (opens in a new tab), one voice). After the tariff year, with buyers pressing for discounts, that's a real risk. Treat a quote well below the others as a question about thread count, fabric weight and finishing, and test the bulk against the approved sample. The checks for linen are on bed linen.

Port And Season

Karur has no inland depot on the official lists we read. It's about 250 km in a straight line from Tuticorin, with Cochin and Chennai the other gateways (our calculation and the cluster-port map), and Trichy the nearest busy cargo airport. Carrier schedules read on 23 September 2026 showed Cochin to Rotterdam at a median of 31 days and Chennai at 25. Ask whether your goods leave from Tuticorin or another port, and quote to it in writing. The HEPC handloom fairs are the export shows that fit. Plan around Pongal in mid-January as well as Diwali, and around the southwest monsoon from June, which slows wet processing.
