Ludhiana Knitwear Cluster: The Winter Town and What It Means for an Importer
- Updated
"Think ludhiana like Milan of India we have capabilities." That's a local in a July 2026 thread about the town's hosiery trade, and the same sentence began with a less flattering verdict, that the cluster has "lost at fashion game" (r/ludhiana, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Further down, a family unit described its range in four words. "We do winter only."

This is a short page because the evidence is short. Ludhiana is famous across India and thin in the export record, and we'd rather tell you that than pad it.
Officially Wool, Really Winter
The government lists Ludhiana as a Town of Export Excellence for woollen knitwear (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Locals describe the same thing more broadly, as winter wear: sweaters, cardigans, thermals, jackets, shawls and kids' woollens. Ludhiana is also known in India for cycles and engineering, but we found no official source for those lines, so we leave them aside.
The Tribune's 2024 report on a weak season is the clearest picture of how the town works. Manufacturers said they ran on margins around 10%, traders in other states sent unsold stock back after a late winter, and Chinese winter wear undercut them at home (The Tribune, 2024). That's a domestic, season-driven business. When the 2025 US tariff hit, Al Jazeera did report Ludhiana garment exporters whose brands cancelled or asked them to absorb a quarter of the cost (Al Jazeera via BHRRC, Sep 2025 (opens in a new tab)), so exporters exist. They're a slice of the town, not its shape.

What That Means When You Buy
Three things follow. First, expect a unit that sells mostly to Indian wholesalers to need a clear spec, a size chart and a labelling brief, because export compliance isn't its daily routine. Check fibre content claims with a test, because a domestic winter range may be sold as wool and made as a blend. Second, minimum orders are set for wholesale. A Ludhiana local told a forum in 2025 that 50 to 100 pieces "isn't even an order" there (a forum post, 2025, one voice). Third, the season matters in your favour or against you. Ludhiana's peak is the Indian winter, from autumn to January. If you buy for the northern hemisphere, you're competing with that peak. If you buy for Australia or New Zealand, your winter falls in India's summer, which may be the town's quiet time. That last point is our inference, so ask it straight out.
For a cotton T-shirt, look first at the Tiruppur knitwear cluster. For a woollen sweater, Ludhiana belongs on the list alongside it, and the product view is on woollen knitwear.
Getting Goods Out
Ludhiana has an inland container depot at Dhandarikalan run by CONCOR, a second terminal at Ahmedgarh and private freight stations (CONCOR terminal list (opens in a new tab), read 23 Sep 2026). It's about 1,090 km in a straight line from Mundra and 1,360 km from Nhava Sheva (our calculation). For a full container, quote to the depot, "FCA ICD Dhandarikalan", as set out on the FCA page. Samples fly from Delhi. Amritsar's international freight is small.
The fair that fits is Bharat Tex in New Delhi. We found no export fair held in Ludhiana itself.
