Chennai Port: The Southern Gateway That Hides in the Shipping Records
- Updated
Chennai port handled about 1.9 million containers (TEU) in FY2025-26, a record (DT Next (opens in a new tab), Reported). It sits a short drive from the biggest leather-footwear belt in India. And yet, when we read US customs records for Indian leather shoes, leather bags, T-shirts, babywear and bed linen, Chennai didn't appear as a port of loading on any of them (US import bill-of-lading records, our analysis, Verified). Not a small share. None.
The port isn't idle. The records are just looking at the wrong ship. A box from Chennai to America is usually carried on a small feeder vessel to Colombo in Sri Lanka, and loaded there onto the ship that crosses the ocean. US customs logs the port where that second ship took the box, so Chennai cargo turns up in the data as Colombo. That's the first thing to understand about this port, and it's why a buyer who looks only at shipping records will never learn that Chennai exists. This page covers what it serves, the three ports that share its name in practice, and where it's quick or slow for your country. Transit figures are carrier estimates from 23 September 2026.
Three Ports Answer to "Chennai"
When a Tamil Nadu supplier says "we ship from Chennai", the box may leave from one of three places.
Chennai port itself, the old harbour in the city, is government-owned. It handled 57.9 million tonnes in FY2025-26, up 5.4% (Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (opens in a new tab), advance estimate, Verified), and containers make up about two thirds of its cargo by the local press's reading.
Kamarajar port, still often called Ennore, lies north of the city and is also government-owned. It handled 49.1 million tonnes, with a second container terminal being expanded.
Kattupalli, next to Kamarajar, is a private port run by the same group as Mundra, with a container terminal it rates at 1.4 million TEU of capacity. We found no figure for what it actually handled last year.
For your contract, the difference is small but real. "FOB Chennai" should name the actual port, because a supplier who trucks to Kattupalli and one who trucks to the city harbour face different cut-offs and different queues. Ask which, and write it down.
Who Ships Through It
The Tamil Nadu leather belt is the main reason a sourcing buyer meets Chennai. Ambur is about 175 km away in a straight line and the Ranipet and Vellore towns around 107 to 188 km (our calculation), and Ambur has a customs freight station of its own on the official list (ICEGATE CFS list, 5 Feb 2024 (opens in a new tab), Verified). In US records, makers with Chennai addresses are among the largest named shippers of Indian leather footwear and leather bags, which fits.
Electronics from the Chennai to Sriperumbudur corridor, about 41 km out, uses it too, though high-value electronics and samples often fly. Bengaluru's makers are about 294 km away and have no closer container port on the east coast.

What about Tiruppur? It's often listed alongside Chennai, and it's about 391 km away. For knitwear the closer gateways are Cochin and Tuticorin, and the Tiruppur story is on the Tuticorin port page. Chennai is the third option there, not the first.
Fast or Slow? It Depends Entirely on Where You Are
These are medians from one carrier's schedule for departures from 24 September 2026, with a second carrier where we had one, port to port and graded Indicative.
UK and EU buyers: quick. Rotterdam 25 days (23 to 31) and London Gateway 28 (26 to 34), on a service that relays through Colombo. That's a week or more faster than Nhava Sheva or Mundra on the same carrier. The schedule doesn't say whether the ship goes by Suez or the Cape, so don't read the gap as a routing fact. It's the best reason in the data to buy south Indian leather FOB Chennai if you sell in Europe. The UK and EU pages cover what happens when the box lands.
Australian buyers: depends on the carrier. One carrier showed 34 days to Sydney, 40.5 to Melbourne, 44 to Brisbane and 43 to Fremantle, all transshipped. Another showed 28.5, 29, 26 and 18.5 days on the same four lanes. That's a big spread for the same port, so get quotes from more than one line before you plan a season.
New Zealand buyers: ask for the Port Klang relay. Chennai feeders go to Auckland in 30 to 32 days on a published Port Klang relay (NZ relay schedule (opens in a new tab)), against a median of 76 days on other routings.
US buyers: slow. Every routing transshipped, mostly at Colombo. New York took 33 days, Savannah 48 and Los Angeles 50. That's slower than the direct services from Mundra and Nhava Sheva, which is the price of sitting on the wrong coast for America.
UAE buyers: avoid it for now. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed, Chennai to Jebel Ali took a median of 28 days and to Khor Fakkan 35, against 6 to 11 days from Nhava Sheva.
The full picture of why one lane can show 18 days and another 43 is on how sea freight gets to you.
The Airport, for Samples and Small Lots
Chennai airport carried 329,865 tonnes of international freight in FY2025-26, behind only Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru (AAI (opens in a new tab), Verified). For leather samples, salesman samples and urgent top-ups from the belt, it's the natural exit, so you won't need to route a parcel through Bengaluru or Mumbai.
Naming It in Your Quote
If your supplier is in the leather belt and you buy full containers, you have two clean choices. FOB at the named Chennai port puts the inland trucking inside the supplier's price, and FOB explains where its risk ends. FCA at the Ambur freight station or the supplier's own door lets you control the whole sea leg, which suits you better if you've found a carrier with the fast Europe or Australia sailing. Check this with your forwarder before you book, because not every service calls at every one of the three ports.

Need hands-on help?
Getting a leather-belt supplier to ship from the right port on the right service, and booking that service in your name, is execution work. SourcingSync does it for foreign buyers.
So next time a US shipping record tells you your Tamil Nadu supplier ships from Colombo, don't go looking for a Sri Lankan factory. The box most likely left from one of the three Chennai ports a few days earlier. It just didn't stay on the ship it started on.
