India Location Guides: Ports, Hubs and Buying Visits

Updated

In January 2024 a UK small business owner asked other importers about shipping from India, and one of them answered with the line every inland buyer should read twice - "it was the inland trucking in india that made it none viable so hopefully your suppliers are near a port" (r/smallbusinessuk, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). The factory was fine. The sea leg was fine. The road between them killed the order.

That's what this page is for. It tells you which Indian ports and airports actually carry export cargo, how to name the right place in your contract, and how to plan a buying trip that sees both a fair and a cluster. It also indexes our location guides, and we'll say up front that there's only one of those so far.

The decision in brief is in the playbook: Location playbooks.

1. Four Places In One Supplier Email

Most supplier emails mention several places, and only one of them belongs in your contract. The city is the postal address and the office. The cluster is the set of workshops and factories, often in an estate outside town, where the goods are made and where your inspector has to go. The market is a trading floor where goods change hands with no factory attached. And the port or inland container depot is the place you write after the Incoterm, which decides when risk passes to you.

So a Tiruppur maker (city and cluster) with a Chennai head office (another city) whose goods leave from Tuticorin (the port) has handed you three places. Only the port goes in the Incoterm. Mix them up and you've either bought an inland leg you can't see or left one nobody is paying for - which is exactly where our UK importer came unstuck.

2. India's Ports, And The One That Matters Most

If you ship containers from the west or north of India, the answer is almost always Nhava Sheva, on the edge of Mumbai. It handled 8.17 m TEU in FY2025-26 (JNPA operating profile (opens in a new tab), Supported), which is more than every other government-owned port put together. Mundra, the big private port in Gujarat, is the other western gateway, but its operator publishes group-wide figures only - 9.1 m TEU across all its ports for April to December 2025 (operator's investor update, Q3 FY26 (opens in a new tab), Supplier-stated). Treat that as the operator's number, because nobody else publishes Mundra's own.

In the south, Chennai with its twin Kamarajar port, Tuticorin and Cochin carry the container trade. Cochin is Tiruppur's nearest port in a straight line, yet very little Tiruppur cargo uses it, because southern boxes are fed to the big transhipment hubs. In the east, Kolkata and Haldia serve the leather trade.

For scale, government-owned ports handled 914.7 Mt of cargo and 14.92 m TEU in FY2025-26, and the non-major ports, which include the private ones, handled 753.1 Mt and 10.77 m TEU (Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, major ports (opens in a new tab) and non-major ports (opens in a new tab), advance figures, Verified). Vadhavan, the planned new port near Mumbai, isn't an option before about December 2029 (The Maritime Standard (opens in a new tab), Reported), so don't plan around it.

The biggest port isn't the question you need answered, though. The question is which port your cluster really uses, and that gateway table lives on the locations page.

3. Air Cargo Leaves From Hubs, Not Towns

All Indian airports handled 3.96 m t of freight in FY2025-26. Delhi carried 1.148 m t, of which 0.74 m t was international, and Mumbai carried 0.927 m t, with Bengaluru and Chennai next (AAI Traffic News, Annexure IV (opens in a new tab), Verified).

Here's the part that trips buyers up. Several export towns with their own airport handled no international freight at all that year - Surat, Rajkot, Indore and Visakhapatnam among them. So a Surat diamond parcel flies from Mumbai, and a Jaipur sample flies from Delhi. Book air freight from the hub and allow for the road to it.

4. Inland Clusters: Name The Depot, Not The Port

This is the fix for our UK importer's problem. If your cluster is inland (Ludhiana, Moradabad, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Agra and most of the north) then the goods can be stuffed and cleared at an inland container depot and travel to the port in a sealed box by rail or road. Name that depot as the FCA place - "FCA ICD Dadri" rather than "FCA Noida" or "FOB Nhava Sheva". Risk passes when the loaded container is handed to your carrier at the depot, the supplier's job ends somewhere it can actually reach, and you can see the inland leg on a quote instead of finding it on an invoice.

One honest catch - this works best for full containers. A small LCL lot often can't be consolidated at an inland depot, and gets trucked to Nhava Sheva or Mundra first. A forwarder in the Indian export trade said as much of Jaipur in 2026, "for LCL jaipur icd dont stuff a console box" (r/exportersindia, 2026 (opens in a new tab), a vendor's view). So on a small order from an inland town, ask where the cargo will be consolidated before you accept the quote. The depot for each cluster, where an official register names one, is in the gateway table on the locations page, and the Incoterm rules are in exporting and trade.

5. Planning A Buying Visit

Pair a fair with the cluster behind it and one trip does two jobs. Fair dates and entry rules live on the fair pages, at /india/fairs/.

Give each cluster a full day and hire a driver who knows the estate. And don't rely on email to set it up. A visitor planning a Karur home-textile trip in January 2026 wrote that only a few of the many factories answered online enquiries, and a local's advice in the same thread was simple - tell the owners beforehand and "just walk into the factories" (r/Karur, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Phone or WhatsApp ahead, then turn up.

Avoid the fortnight either side of Diwali (8 November 2026), unless you're there to celebrate, because many units close and workers go home.

6. Location Guides Available

Tiruppur knitwear cluster covers the knitwear makers, the depot and the real gateway, the US and UK lanes, and how to visit. It was researched on 24 September 2026.

It's the right first guide because Tiruppur shows every trap on this page at once. It has no port, its US cargo mostly loads at Colombo, and its UK paperwork is filed at Chennai or Tuticorin. Our UK importer would have spotted the trucking problem on page one.
