Firozabad Glass Cluster: Furnaces, Bangles and the Christmas Calendar
- Updated
By April in a normal year, a Firozabad glass factory is already making Christmas ornaments for American shops. In 2026 one factory didn't start. The West Asia war had cut the gas that keeps its furnaces hot, and a glassmaker who is vice president of the national glass manufacturers' federation put it simply - "We're not part of the war, but we're bearing the brunt of it" (Oman Observer, New York Times syndicate, 4 May 2026 (opens in a new tab), Reported).

If you buy glass decorations, tableware or giftware from India, that sentence is the most useful thing on this page. Firozabad is India's officially designated glass town, and it runs on furnaces that can't simply be switched off and on. So when you order matters as much as who you order from. Below is what the town makes, how big it is by the only official count, a timeline of what 2026 did to it, and how to plan around the calendar. It's a short page, because the public evidence on Firozabad is thin, and we'd rather tell you so.
What The Town Makes
The government lists Firozabad as a Town of Export Excellence for glass artware (DGFT, Appendix 1B (opens in a new tab)). The state's own description is wider. It calls Firozabad "the largest cluster of glassware manufacturing in India" and names three product families, bangles, decorative glassware and utility glass (UP ODOP, Firozabad (opens in a new tab)). Trade press adds container glass to the list (Outlook Business, 2026).
Bangles are a daily ornament for many Indian women, so our reading is that they are mostly a home-market trade. The export lines are the decorative and festive pieces, such as ornaments, lamps, vases and tableware. Most units are small, which means two things. Your order may be split across several workshops, and finishing can vary between them. Ask how many units will make your order and set one approved sample as the standard for all of them.
2026: A Timeline Every Glass Buyer Should Know
- Early March. Gas supplies to Firozabad units were cut by more than 20% after the West Asia conflict began (Outlook Business, 2 Apr 2026, Reported).
- March. Output fell by nearly 40%. Industry sources told the magazine that "not a single export container moved last month", and soda ash, a key glass input, became scarce as well (same source).
- April. The month when Christmas ornament production for the US normally starts. One factory owner said his didn't (Oman Observer, May 2026).
- March to August. The window Firozabad normally uses to build stock for Christmas and Halloween exports, which in 2026 sat largely inside the gas squeeze.
You won't see that timeline on a supplier's price list, but it's in every 2026 delivery date. Our reading, which is Indicative, is that the risk is structural. A glass furnace needs continuous fuel, and Firozabad's fuel arrives by sea through the same chokepoints that slowed its exports. The same thing happened in the tile town of Morbi at the same time.
How To Plan A Festive Order
- Order earlier than your instinct says. If Christmas stock normally starts in April, your samples need approving before then. Build a buffer for a fuel shock, because 2026 showed one can take months out of the season.
- Ask what happened in 2026. A supplier that kept running, switched fuel or delivered late but delivered will tell you a lot about its resilience. A vague answer tells you something too.
- Write packing into the order. Glass is fragile, and the road to a port is long (see below). Specify carton strength, inner packing and a drop test, and inspect packed goods, not just loose samples. The inspection method is on quality control in India.
- Plan the freight around the same chokepoints. When Gulf shipping is disrupted, both fuel and freight get dearer at once. Sea freight routes explains the routing.

If you need someone to visit the units, check the approved sample against production and supervise packing, SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) does it.
Getting Glass Out
Firozabad has no export terminal of its own on the lists we read. The nearest container depot is in Agra, ICD Agra East Bank, and the ports are far. In a straight line Firozabad is 1,004 km from Mundra and 1,068 km from Nhava Sheva (our great-circle calculation), so the road is longer. That long inland leg is another reason to quote on FCA at a named depot and to pay attention to packing. Samples fly from Delhi.
One more thing worth knowing. When we looked at who ships glass to the US, Moradabad exporters showed up more than Firozabad ones. Our guess, which we have not tested, is that some Firozabad glass leaves through Moradabad's mixed-goods export houses. The detail is on ceramics and glass, and the brass town is on Moradabad.
Where To Meet Makers
Firozabad's decorative glass shows at the IHGF Delhi Fair, the handicrafts export council's twice-yearly show at Greater Noida. The autumn 2026 edition runs 13 to 17 October. We haven't found a buyer fair held in Firozabad itself. Before you shortlist, run the free public checks on how to verify Indian suppliers, because small units are the norm here.
Back To The Furnace
The factory that didn't make its Christmas ornaments in April 2026 wasn't a bad supplier. It was a good supplier without gas. That's the lesson Firozabad teaches better than any other Indian cluster. For glass, the question isn't only "can you make it" but "what keeps your furnace lit, and what happens if it goes out?"
