Jodhpur Handicrafts Cluster: India's Furniture Town, From Timber Yard to Mundra
- Updated
Between August and November 2024, Jodhpur sent out 21,053 containers of handicrafts. In the same four months of 2025 it sent 12,579. That's the figure the local exporters' association gave a reporter in December 2025, along with a 40% fall in exports since the US tariff went to 50%, and a second worry already on the calendar, the EU's deforestation rules for wood (ETV Bharat, 1 Dec 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

A town that counts its trade in containers is a furniture town, whatever the official list says. Here we follow one order through Jodhpur the way it really runs, from the timber to the ship, and stop at each point where a buyer outside India makes a decision. The honest limit is that nobody publishes how much Jodhpur makes. We use the association's figures where we must and the shipping record where we can.
Stage 1: The Order Lands At An Export House
The government lists Jodhpur as a Town of Export Excellence for handicrafts (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and the textile ministry runs it as a handicraft mega cluster (National Portal of India (opens in a new tab)). Furniture isn't on either label, which is why the town's own name for itself, a handicraft town, sometimes confuses buyers searching for furniture.
The association counts about 1,000 handicraft units and 2,500 manufacturers in the town (ETV Bharat, 2025, an association figure). Your order usually goes to an export house that holds the buyer, the export code and the showroom, and that places parts of the work with workshops. A Jodhpur exporter gave small makers this advice in June 2026: "Go to expos, or supply locally to Saharanpur, Moradabad and Jodhpur exporters in volume" (r/IndiaBusiness, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). That's the system from the inside. It's efficient and normal, so ask which workshops make your piece and inspect where the finishing happens.
Stage 2: The Wood Is Chosen
This is the first decision that's really yours. Jodhpur works in sheesham, mango and acacia, and the names are used loosely, so the wood is only what you specify and check. Mango cracks after delivery when it's finished before it's dry enough, a complaint we cover in depth on India's furniture industry. Write the species and a moisture reading into the order.
The species is also legal paperwork now. The EU's deforestation regulation applies to wood furniture from 30 December 2026 for larger operators, and it asks for the plot of land the timber grew on. Jodhpur's association named it as the second blow, after the tariff (ETV Bharat, 2025). The Australian, US, UK and New Zealand rules ask their own versions of the same question. They're all on timber legality. If your supplier can't trace the wood, the furniture can't go to the EU, however good it looks.
Stage 3: Finish And Pack
Finishes are the second thing to specify. Buyers abroad complain of factory finishes that are either soft and easily marked or too glossy. Name the finish system and the sheen in the order and approve it on a sample panel. Approve the packing too, because the goods go by road to the depot and then weeks at sea, and any solid-wood crate or pallet needs ISPM 15 treatment and marking, as set out on ISPM 15.
Stage 4: Out Through The Depot
Jodhpur has two inland container depots, CONCOR's at Bhagat ki Kothi and the Thar Dry Port (CONCOR terminal list (opens in a new tab), read 23 Sep 2026). For a full container, quote "FCA ICD Bhagat ki Kothi" or the depot your supplier uses, as on the FCA page. Jodhpur's own airport isn't in the national international-freight table, so samples go by courier or from Delhi or Ahmedabad.
From Mundra, carrier schedules we read on 23 September 2026 showed medians of 30 days to New York, 36 to Savannah, 38 to Rotterdam, 35 to Sydney and 31 to Fremantle (medians of a few sailings, and they change). For a mixed small order, ask how and where the supplier will consolidate before you agree a price.
Stage 5: It Lands, And Duty Depends On What's In It
A US buyer should know that wooden furniture with upholstery, and furniture with steel in it, has drawn separate US duties beyond the general tariff, and the rules moved through 2025 and 2026. Classify the piece by what it is made of and check the rate with your customs broker before you book. The current US position is on India to the US, and for Australia the toppling-furniture standard on chests of drawers applies, as noted on the furniture page.
When To Go
The IHGF Delhi Fair in Greater Noida, 13 to 17 October 2026 and again in March 2027, is where Jodhpur's exporters show. A visit to the town lets you see the timber yards and finishing lines. The Diwali fortnight around 8 November slows everything.
