Meerut Sports Goods Cluster: Bats, Balls and the Checks That Matter

Updated

Ask where Indian cricket bats come from and you'll hear two names, Meerut and Jalandhar. Only one of them has an official source behind it. Uttar Pradesh names sports goods as Meerut's district product and lists what that means - cricket bats, balls, protective gear, hockey sticks, shuttlecocks, and boxing and athletics goods (UP ODOP, Meerut (opens in a new tab)). For Jalandhar we found no official sports-goods source at all, so we don't make claims about it.

This is a short page, because Meerut's public record is short. It isn't on the national list of Towns of Export Excellence, and the size figures that circulate are weak. What we can give a buyer outside India is the official picture, what the size claims are worth, five checks to write into an order, and how goods leave the town.

What The Size Claims Are Worth

You'll read that Meerut has "over 35,200 registered sports goods manufacturing units" and makes 40% of India's sports goods exports. That comes from a 2025 business article which itself cites a newspaper blog (India Briefing, Apr 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It's a second-hand figure and we couldn't trace it to an official count, so treat it as colour, not as a size. Sports goods also have no separate line in India's main export statistics, which is why firm figures are so hard to find.

What does hold up is the market picture in the box above. Cricket and hockey buyers in the UK and Australia are Meerut's natural customers, and they're also the buyers who know a good bat from a bad one.

Five Checks For A Meerut Order

  1. Willow species and grade, in writing. English and Kashmir willow are different woods. Club players say Kashmir willow plays heavier with less "ping" but suits juniors and casual play (r/Cricket, 2026 (opens in a new tab), Reported). Fine for a junior range, wrong for a premium one. Name the species and define the grade by grain count and allowed blemishes.
  2. Weight on arrival, not weight at the factory. Buyers report bats landing heavier than quoted. Make weight at your warehouse, within a stated tolerance, a contract term.
  3. A pre-shipment check by someone who plays. Grain, knots and pick-up are judged in the hand. An inspector working to a written grade does better than a photo. The method is on quality control in India.
  4. Balls and protective gear tested to your market's rules. Leather balls fall under the leather chemistry rules on leather and footwear, and helmets and guards may need your market's safety standard. Ask your importer of record or customs broker which applies before you order.
  5. Know when to look elsewhere. For boxing and martial-arts gear, buyers go to Sialkot. For toys, the rules and makers are on toys and sporting goods.

Getting Goods Out

Meerut has an inland container depot nearby, ICD Rori at Modinagar, on the customs list (ICEGATE CFS list, 5 Feb 2024 (opens in a new tab)). The ports are far. In a straight line Meerut is 1,059 km from Mundra and 1,215 km from Nhava Sheva (our great-circle calculation). Small, light orders can go by air from Delhi. For a container, quote on FCA at the named depot, and agree the packing in writing.

Meeting Makers

The India Sporting Goods Fair is set for 12 to 14 March 2027 at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, within reach of Meerut for a combined trip. Run the free public checks on how to verify Indian suppliers before you visit. If you want someone to visit Meerut workshops, grade bats in hand and weigh them before they ship, SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) does that.
