Rajkot Engineering and Casting Cluster: A Diesel-Engine Town That Kept Its Foundries

Updated

India's foundry institute sums up Rajkot in one line. Each foundry cluster, it says, is known for the end market it serves, and "the Rajkot cluster for diesel engine castings" (Institute of Indian Foundrymen, updated Nov 2025 (opens in a new tab), Supplier-stated). The district's own profile tells the rest of the story. Rajkot "was formerly the leading centre in India in the field of diesel engine and submersible pumps", and its foundries "came up mainly to cater to casting requirements of the local diesel engine industry" (Rajkot district profile, undated (opens in a new tab), Reported).

A milling cutter machining a part

Formerly. The engine trade moved on, and the foundries and machine shops it built stayed and found other customers. That's the Rajkot a foreign buyer meets today: a deep base of small metal-working firms, most of them selling inside India, with a smaller tier that exports. This page sets out what the town makes, where in the district the work happens, how to tell the export tier from the rest, and how goods get to the Gujarat ports. One caveat up front. Rajkot has no official export designation and no published export figure, so we label every number by how far it can be trusted.

What the Government Calls It, and What It Doesn't

Rajkot isn't on India's list of Towns of Export Excellence (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab), Verified), and we found no other official cluster listing for its engineering trade. That doesn't make it a small place. It means the evidence comes from industry bodies, the district's own profile and shipping records, and we say which is which.

The district profile lists what Rajkot is known for: "bearings, diesel engines, kitchen knives and other cutting appliances, watch parts, automotive parts, forging industry, casting industry, machine tools", and it names CNC machine builders and a three-wheeler maker among its larger firms (Rajkot district profile, Reported). The US shipping records narrow that list to what actually leaves for abroad, and it's metal parts made to drawing: castings, motor parts, gears and fittings (Intelligence item 1).

So the short answer to "what can Rajkot make for me?" is grey and ductile iron castings, machined castings, gear and transmission parts, pump and motor parts, fittings and forgings. It's a supplier town for engineering buyers, not a catalogue town.

Where the Work Happens

The foundries aren't in one street. The district profile places them in Aji Vasahat, along Gondal Road and Bhavnagar Road, in the Shapar-Veraval industrial estate and in the Metoda industrial estate (Rajkot district profile, Reported). The estates sit on the city's edges, so a day of visits is a day of driving between them. Plan it by estate, not by company name, and ask each maker which estate the melting happens in, because a showroom office in the city and a foundry in Shapar can be the same firm.

That geography also explains the main risk. A town of hundreds of small foundries and machine shops runs on job work. One firm pours, another machines, a third heat-treats or paints. That's how the cluster works and it's no reason for suspicion. It's a reason to ask, at the quote, which firm does each step and to make the inspection follow your part. A buyer of Indian machined parts described the failure mode exactly when he said the contract winner "just pieces out the work to 10 different smaller operations" (r/manufacturing, Nov 2025, from our forum logs, Reported). The answer to that is in castings and forgings from India, which takes a drawing step by step to an approved part.

Telling the Export Tier From the Rest

If about 2% of the foundries export, then most of the firms you'll find on a directory search sell to Indian engine, pump and machinery makers. Many are good at it. But an exporter brings things a domestic foundry often doesn't need: material certificates per heat, dimensional reports against your drawing, export packing, and the habit of answering an RFQ in writing.

Four checks sort them quickly:

  1. Shipping history. Ask for evidence of export shipments to a market like yours, and cross-check the company name in public US bill-of-lading data if your market is the US. How to verify Indian suppliers shows the free records.
  2. Customer type. Ask what share of output goes to OEMs and which industries. An OEM-supplying foundry has already been through approval processes like yours.
  3. Paperwork sample. Ask for a redacted first-article report and an EN 10204 type 3.1 material certificate from a current customer.
  4. Who does the machining. In-house or outside, and where. Your inspection goes there.

Getting Goods Out

Rajkot sits 123 km in a straight line from Mundra and is also close to Pipavav, both Gujarat container ports (our cluster-port map, great-circle distances, Indicative routing). We found no inland container depot in Rajkot district on the official lists we read (CONCOR and ICEGATE, 23 Sep 2026), so expect your container to be stuffed at the factory or at a freight station nearer the port and trucked down. Quote FCA at a named place in writing, so the truck leg is clear, and see the Mundra port page for the gateway.

For air, Rajkot's airport handled no international freight in FY2025-26 (AAI, Verified). Samples and urgent parts fly from Ahmedabad.

On the duty side, castings and steel articles carry two rules that matter more than the tariff rate itself. In the US, many steel articles are Section 232 derivatives, which pay the metals rate on the full value. In the EU, forged and other steel articles in heading 7326 can fall under the carbon levy, CBAM, while cast articles in 7325 don't by our reading. Both turn on the exact HS line, so get it confirmed by your customs broker before you compare quotes. Engineering goods sets out both rules.

Meeting Makers

The engineering export council's India Engineering Sourcing Show is the event where audited exporters set out their stands, though its next date isn't announced. Otherwise Rajkot is a visit town. Book the factories by estate, go with your drawings and a list of the four checks above, and allow time for the drive.

Shortlisting Rajkot foundries, visiting the estates, auditing the subcontractors behind a quote and inspecting parts where they're machined is execution, not knowledge. SourcingSync does it for foreign buyers.

Back to the Diesel Engines

Rajkot built its foundries for an engine industry that moved on, and the foundries didn't close. They learned to pour for pumps, motors, cars and machines, and a small share learned to ship abroad. That history is the useful part for a buyer. The skill base is deep and the export tier is thin, so the work is in finding the firms in that tier and making sure your part stays with them from the melt to the last machined face.

For the other foundry towns and what each specialises in, start at castings and forgings from India, and for all of India's export towns, India's manufacturing clusters.
