Bhadohi-Mirzapur Carpet Cluster: India's Hand-Knotted Belt, Read From Outside

Updated

The 50th India Carpet Expo ran at the Carpet Expo Mart in Bhadohi from 4 to 7 October 2026, and the organiser hasn't announced the next one yet. The 49th is the best guide we have to what you'd find. In October 2025 the council invited 442 overseas importers from 67 countries, and 215 came, from 42. They placed orders worth ₹200 to 240 crore, under half the ₹500 crore of the edition before. The council's chairman put it down to "reduced participation, with around 100 fewer stalls and 125 fewer buyers, mainly due to US tariffs." The one bright line was that the new UK trade deal brought 10 new UK buyers and 12 from Australia (Outlook Business, Oct 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

A hand-knotted carpet with a dense pattern

A fair held in the cluster itself, in a small town in eastern Uttar Pradesh, tells you how concentrated this trade is. This page follows the order you'd actually meet the belt in, from the first look at the record to the container leaving, and it says plainly where the evidence runs out.

Step 1: Know The Map

The government lists Bhadohi for carpets and other floor coverings, and Mirzapur for handmade carpet and dari, as Towns of Export Excellence (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The textile ministry treats Mirzapur-Bhadohi as one handicraft mega cluster (National Portal of India (opens in a new tab)), and Varanasi next door is part of the same belt in the shipping record. Think of it as one weaving region with three town names on the paperwork.

Step 2: Read The Record, Then Visit

The shipping data does something unusual here. In most Indian categories a quarter or more of US bills carry no shipper name. In hand-knotted carpets it's 13.5%, the lowest of all 21 codes we read, and almost nobody ships through a forwarder's name (our analysis). So the belt is one of the few places where a foreign buyer can see, from abroad, which exporters have a real and recent US track record. Use it to build a shortlist, then confirm each name with the checks on how to verify Indian suppliers.

Two cautions while you read. US data follows declared origin, so the India pages for 5701 include some Nepal-addressed shippers. And ImportYeti's own geography is sometimes wrong, so read the raw address, not the tag.

Step 3: Decide What You're Buying

The belt makes hand-knotted, tufted, flat-woven and dari, and the construction decides the checks. Hand-knotted rugs are the belt's signature and the line it dominates. Tufted rugs are made here and in Panipat, which leads that line nationally. The difference in durability, shedding and backing glue is on India's carpet industry, and the product-level detail is on handmade rugs from India.

Then specify colour like an engineer. A complaint that keeps coming back from foreign Etsy buyers is a made-to-order rug that arrives in a different colour from the listing. A US buyer in April 2026 put it simply: "The rug was listed as pink, and the rug they sent me is gray" (r/Etsy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). That was a retail Etsy order, not a wholesale contract, but the cause carries over. Approve a physical strike-off or a dyed yarn pom, never a screen image, and write the approval into the order.

Step 4: Go To The Fair, Or Time Your Visit

The India Carpet Expo runs in Bhadohi in October and is the obvious way in, because the exporters are a short drive from their own stands. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026 and Chhath, the big eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar festival, follows soon after, so weaving slows for weeks after the October fair. Hand-knotting is slow in any season, so book well ahead and ask for a loom-start date, not just a ship date.

Step 5: Plan The Leg To The Port

This is the belt's practical puzzle. Neither Bhadohi nor Mirzapur has an export terminal on the official lists we read. The nearest CONCOR terminal, at Chunar, is listed as domestic only (CONCOR terminal list (opens in a new tab), read 23 Sep 2026). Bhadohi is about 1,220 km in a straight line from Nhava Sheva and 1,340 km from Mundra, and about half that from Kolkata (our calculation). Yet the US record says most US-bound carpet leaves from Nhava Sheva.

Our reading is that the western ports' frequent direct US and Europe services are worth the long haul for this cargo, but that's an inference, so check this with your forwarder before you book. Carrier schedules we read on 23 September 2026 showed Nhava Sheva to New York at a median of 33 days and to Rotterdam at 33. For Australia, Nhava Sheva to Sydney showed a median of 31 days on one service. Samples and small urgent lots fly from Varanasi, which handled about 1,000 tonnes of international freight in FY2025-26, or from Delhi (AAI).

What Changed In The Tariff Year

The US tariff on Indian carpets went to 50% in August 2025, and the October fair felt it. In February 2026 the council said the US had cut the rate on Indian carpets to 18% (TaxTMI, reporting CEPC, Feb 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Check the current figure on India to the US before you plan. For UK and Australian buyers, the October 2025 fair showed what the trade deals do in practice, which is bring buyers to Bhadohi who weren't there before.
