Jaipur Handicrafts Cluster: Four Trades in One City, and How to Buy From Each
- Updated
In July 2023 a visitor asked Jaipur's local forum where to find apparel manufacturers. The first useful answer was a warning, not a name. "Be careful, this business is unorganised. Lot of people committing that they will get everything sorted but barely." A second local added that agents "take so much time to delivery, charge double" and deliver poor product, and pointed the visitor towards designers with portfolios and the factories in the city's industrial areas, Mansarovar and Sitapura (r/jaipur, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).

That thread is three years old and it still describes the first week of most foreign buyers in Jaipur. The city is lovely, famous and easy to reach, and it's several trades sharing one name, each with its own front door and its own way of going wrong. So this page splits Jaipur into four, says what each one is, and ends with how goods leave. The government lists the whole city under one word, handicrafts (DGFT, Appendix 1B, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and no official source gives the size of any of the four.
1. Block Print: Sanganer And Bagru, Not The City Shops
Jaipur's hand block printing is done mostly in two places outside the centre. Practitioners split them by dye. Bagru is known for natural indigo and dabu, a mud-resist technique, and Sanganer for synthetic-dye printing, as a workshop organiser put it in 2024 (r/jaipur, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). The city's bazaars sell plenty of "block print" too, and locals say much of it is screen-printed (r/jaipur, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). So verify hand block at the workshop, where you can see the blocks and the slight irregularity of each repeat.
Three spec points follow. The usual base cloth is light, voile weight or close to it, chosen because it takes the dye easily. A UK sewist wrote in 2026 that her block-print cotton was "sheer and needs lining" (r/sewing, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). If you're making bedding or a structured garment, specify a heavier base by weight. Second, a natural-dye or "azo free" claim is something you test, not something you print on a label unseen, because EU and UK rules restrict certain azo dyes. Third, capacity follows the weather. One Bagru studio offered orders "as small as 20 pieces" in 2026, and said the work "relies entirely on human hands and weather (sun drying)" (r/IndiaBusiness, 2026 (opens in a new tab), Supplier-stated). Small runs are realistic here. Monsoon lead times are longer, so plan July to September orders with slack.
2. The Bazaars: Gems, Silver And Costume Jewellery
The jewellery trade lives in Johari Bazaar and its lanes, with Bapu Bazaar for oxidised and costume pieces. It's a real wholesale market for experienced buyers, and foreign visitors have also documented gem scams aimed at tourists in the city over many years. The checks for stones, silver purity, plating and lead are long enough to need their own page, and they're on India's gems and jewellery industry and fashion jewellery. The one point to carry from here is that a certificate from a lab you don't know is the seller's claim, not proof.
3. The Export Houses: Furniture, Rugs And Linen
This is the Jaipur most foreign volume buyers deal with, and the one the tourist doesn't see. Its exporters work from offices and units in the industrial areas, and in the US record they ship solid-wood furniture, hand-knotted rugs and bed linen at a scale that puts the city among the leading named shippers in each (our count above). For furniture, the town to compare with is Jodhpur. For rugs, it's the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt.
A note on labels. A Srinagar weaver said in 2025 that many silk rugs sold as Kashmiri are woven in Jaipur or Bhadohi. That's a labelling problem for the seller who renames them, not a fault in the Jaipur rug, and it's covered on handmade rugs from India.
4. Garments
Jaipur also makes clothing, and not only printed kurtas. Makers there describe streetwear, sportswear and casualwear for Indian marketplace brands (r/ClothingStartups, 2026, Supplier-stated). It's the trade our opening visitor was looking for, and the advice from the locals still stands. Start from factories with a fixed address in an industrial area and a portfolio you can check, rather than from an agent who promises everything. For a wider view of India's garment belts, see the NCR apparel hub.
Your First Trip
Shops near the tourist sites that stage printing demonstrations, and that you reach through a guide, have been reported charging around twice the market price. One visitor found "similar sarees were being sold at less than half the price" in Johari Bazaar afterwards (r/jaipur, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Go to workshops and export houses by appointment, not through a guide. The wider markets view is on India's wholesale markets.
How Goods Leave
Jaipur has a CONCOR inland depot at Kanakpura and a multimodal park at Kathuwas (CONCOR terminal list (opens in a new tab), read 23 Sep 2026). It's about 770 km in a straight line from Mundra and 930 km from Nhava Sheva (our calculation). A full container can be stuffed and sealed at the depot, so quote "FCA ICD Kanakpura". A small lot will likely travel to the port first, and if you're combining Jaipur goods with goods from Moradabad or Jodhpur, each supplier files its own export paperwork, so compare that cost with LCL vs FCL before you plan a mixed shipment. Jaipur's airport handled about 2,144 tonnes of international freight in FY2025-26, so samples can fly from the city (AAI (opens in a new tab)).
The IHGF Delhi Fair, 13 to 17 October 2026 in Greater Noida, is where Jaipur's home and furniture exporters show. A Jaipur visit fits naturally after the fair. Avoid the Diwali fortnight around 8 November.
