Kanpur Leather Cluster: Saddlery First, Then Shoes, Rarely Handbags

Updated

The short answer to "what does Kanpur make in leather?" is that it depends which records you read, and the records disagree with the reputation. Ask the state and you get a list. Uttar Pradesh says Kanpur is "renowned for leather footwear, saddlery, bags, belts, garments, wallets" (UP ODOP, Kanpur Nagar (opens in a new tab)). Ask the shipping manifests and one word comes up again and again, and it isn't bags.

Dyed leather hides hanging up

This page sorts that out for a buyer outside India. It's built mostly on our own reading of US import records, because no one publishes Kanpur's output by product. The town is also on the government's list of Towns of Export Excellence for leather products, one of only three leather towns with that status (DGFT, Appendix 1B (opens in a new tab)). The rules every leather order shares, from chromium VI to deforestation, live on leather and footwear, so we don't repeat them here.

The Answer In One Table

Here is what we'd tell a buyer who asked "should Kanpur be on my list?" for each kind of leather product. It's built from the findings above.

You buyKanpur?Why
Saddles, bridles, harness, horse rugs and other tackYes, start hereThe district's export houses are built around it. US buyers of riding goods show up among the consignees of Indian leather shoes too
Leather shoes and bootsYes, alongside Agra and Tamil NaduKanpur's named shoe makers are the largest group in the US records
Handbags, wallets, small leather goodsUsually look elsewhere firstKanpur is under 1% of named US bag bills. Kolkata and Chennai lead
Finished leather by the square footPossibleSeveral top shippers sit in Jajmau, the tannery district, and list finished leather

The table is a starting point, not a rule. Kanpur's state page does list bags and wallets, and a firm that mainly makes tack may make a fine belt. What the records show is where the volume and the experience sit.

Why Saddlery Matters To You

Saddlery is a quiet trade with demanding buyers. A horse owner tests a bridle in a way a shopper never tests a wallet, so stitching, edge finish and hardware get looked at hard. India ranks as the second-largest exporter in the world, by the council's own account, and the UK buys a large share of its tack from India, with India supplying 21.9% of UK imports of saddlery and harness in 2025 (our analysis of UN Comtrade, Verified).

Two things follow for your order. First, many Kanpur tack houses also list metal fittings and textile goods among their top lines, because a saddlery range is part leather, part buckle and part fabric. Ask who makes the hardware and which metal it is, because a cheap buckle fails long before good leather does. Second, much of India's leather isn't cowhide. Buffalo, goat and sheep are common, and buffalo varies in thickness and stretch, so state the species, thickness and tannage in the order. Leather and footwear explains why that matters for testing and for EU deforestation rules.

The 2025 Shock, Seen From Kanpur

When the US raised its tariff on Indian goods in August 2025, Kanpur's exporters said about ₹1,500 crore of orders had stalled. The town had sent about ₹1,000 crore of leather to the US in FY2024-25. The leather council's chairman said customers were "asking us for a 20% to 25% discount on products, which is not possible" (ETV Bharat, 31 Aug 2025 (opens in a new tab), Reported).

For a buyer in the UK, the EU or Australia, that's context rather than a bargain. The US rate has changed since, and the current one is on India to the US. What it tells you is that Kanpur's export houses have spare capacity in a bad US year, and that the strongest of them have been through squeezes before. Ask how a supplier handled 2025. The answer tells you a lot.

How Goods Leave Kanpur

Kanpur has an export depot at the Juhi railway yard, ICD Kanpur, run by the national rail container operator (CONCOR terminal list (opens in a new tab), read 23 Sep 2026). The port is the open question. In a straight line Kanpur is 917 km from Kolkata, 1,126 km from Nhava Sheva and 1,151 km from Mundra (our great-circle calculation). Kolkata is nearer, but the western ports have far more direct sailings to Europe and the US. In US records, Indian leather shoes load mostly at Nhava Sheva, and we found nothing that says how Kanpur's own exporters choose.

So ask, and get the answer in writing. A supplier who ships through Kolkata and one who railed to Nhava Sheva will quote you different transit times, and the right Incoterm names the depot, not the port. That reasoning is on FCA and location guides. Samples fly from Delhi or Lucknow, which handled about 5,300 tonnes of international freight in FY2025-26 (AAI, Verified).

Meeting Kanpur's Makers

Kanpur's exporters show at the leather council's events and at ITPO's Delhi footwear fair. The India International Footwear Fair runs 5 to 7 August 2027 in New Delhi, and BFLEX and the India International Leather Fair in Chennai are the others to watch. We haven't confirmed a saddlery-only show in India, so for tack the leather council's member list and a visit are the practical route.

Before you visit, run the free checks on how to verify Indian suppliers. If you'd rather someone else shortlisted tack or shoe makers in Kanpur, visited the units and witnessed your sample and test sampling, that's what SourcingSync (opens in a new tab) does.
